Hello everyone!
Day 3 was an early start for me, where I had Costa Coffee for the first time (The British equivalent of Starbucks). I enjoyed a nice hot chocolate that certainly lived up to its name, a croissant, and some yogurt. With all of this food in tow, I attempted to one-handed swipe into the Tube and I actually succeeded! We went to the Thames and sailed to Greenwich, which you might know as the origin for Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) which is the standard for global timekeeping. The theme of this day was exploration both for me and the class, and we went to the Royal Observatory. I saw a couple of exhibits about the age of exploration and saw some beautiful palaces. Overall, an enjoyable excursion, but later that night saw me struggle with my own exploration of the city of London.
Wandering around one of the random neighborhoods of London with a group of my compatriots, we were trying to find food. I was starting to run low on cash for the moment (I had yet to take out my second set of money), I was hoping to find something cheep. Everything was around 15 pounds, which is a crime for food. We wandered for a good hour to find something to eat...and then it dawned on me. I looked around the well lit buildings around me, the innumerable clothing stores, and the burgeoning theatre scene. I was in freaking SoHo. No wonder food was so expensive! So my new friends and I hopped on the nearest subway tunnel to get to Baker Street and have a lovely pizza dinner. That night I came home with everyone else, and enjoyed a Stella Artois alongside a glass of Pinot Grigio. That wine class is definitely coming in handy!
So today, I woke up at 4 p.m. I stayed up way too late talking with people. Oops. So I realized that my day off was halfway done, and I needed to try to get some experiences out of the way. Along with my roommate, who used me sleeping in as a justification for him sleeping in, collected one other to head towards the Tate Museum of Modern Art, which I have been to once before during my younger exploration of the city. It was closed as soon as I got there. We then figured there was the Globe nearby which might be open. It was and was showing the play "The Knight of the Burning Pestle" which is a classic parody of knighthood and the new rich in the same line of Don Quixote. I enjoyed it a great deal, and people even came out of the wall behind me through a hole to dance with me! I got some Italian food, McDonald's, and took the Tube home to write this email!
I am off to bed, for my last full day in London before going to Cambridge!
Cheers!
