I had the pleasure of attending the leadershape institute in December 2011. I have long been entranced with the idea of changing the world, especially through educational reform. It was at this retreat that my life's goals and directions were more refined. I worked intimately with a small group of 10 people, all with different backgrounds and drives. Most importantly, however, was the fact that they were all motivated. We all had different veins through which we hoped to change the world-some through religion, some through medicine, others with technology.
I was fascinated with how well the group at the Leadershape Institute took to me. Many people seemed to be drawn to the fact that I actually seemed to live breathe and sleep education. I truly believed in the reason I was at this retreat, and I even heard the comment "I wish I could see what goes on in Logan's head" as I asked questions to a board of leaders on the latter few days of the retreat.
Yet there was a challenge presented to me. One of the fellow members of my team said that a risk of having a dream that permeates one's existence is "selfishly portraying a selfless vision". That is a phrase that has stayed with me and haunted me ever since I have returned from the Leadershape Institute. I have learned that being a dreamer is much more than living your own agenda. In a way, you set aside your own will to help accomplish something greater.
My interest and passion for education was amplified by this honors experience, and it is a part of my essense. It is not all I am, but it is a major force behind my being, and it was partly through this leadership experience that it was awakened.
So...saying that an experience is impactful without evidence is meaningless. To counteract that, feel free to look over some samples of my work from this week-long seminar dedicated to igniting the human spirit of leadership.
Firstly is a copy of my breakthrough blueprint. Even though the details of my journey have been slightly altered from my time at Leadershape, there are some constants that remain in my dreaming process. I continue to know that I am going to need the help of others to accomplish my goals, and also that I need to start from the ground up to help make a difference in the education system. I am going to start with tutoring, then teaching, and then hopefully get to a point where I can found and run my own model school. Some wonderful opportunities have come my way since the retreat, particularly a fantastic internship with Breakthrough Cincinnati to teach mathematics. This was not anticipated at Leadershape, but it is certainly some teaching experience that will allow for me to make some more of those connections and get that experience that is necessary to truly make a difference.
Leadershape taught me that a genuine understanding of the self is necessary to establish change in the world at large. With this in mind, I have included a copy of my DISC personality inventory. As a walk through, graph III is the most important subject of the inventory. A viewer will quickly notice a sharp spike in the "I" section of the inventory. This essentially means that I excel in presentations, emotional intelligence, and energy for matters at hand. I, along with those who are closest to me, have known these things to be integral to my personality for a long time, though it means a lot to see this laid out before me in as objective a manner as possible. This also highlights the need to connect with people excelling in Dominance, Stability, and Control (The D, S, and C parts of the DISC inventory).
Finally, I include a picture of my leadershape family cluster. It is these friends, fellow dreamers, and comrades who have remained with me throughout the process of my dream since leadershape, and were also there for me during this highly influential week of my life.
